Grocery shopping

I first saw this video when my sister, Therese, shared it on her facebook. I wanted it. I was talking to my boyfriend about it and he told me that you can buy it in the grocery. And I was like, why haven't I ever seen it!? So when Therese's Japanese classmate in Taiwan went back to Japan for a vacation, we asked him to buy some for us. But he couldn't find some. So then we all thought that maybe it would only be sold in Tokyo because that's where most foreigners go and they're probably the only ones interested in buying this.

But no! I went grocery shopping for dinner and saw... these:

Boo ya! I bought the sushi kit for 248 yen per box--around Php 124 a pop.
158 yen for the ハンバーガーやさん one on the left.
168 yen for the おえがきグミランド on the right.

I can't wait to play with these when Therese comes back from Taiwan during her winter break!

Tiffy in Japan: A Christmas Nonholiday

A Christmas Nonholiday
December 25, 2009
Tiffy in Japan

Merry Christmas everyone! I'd love to say the same for me but as you can see, it's a nonholiday for me. Christmas is not a holiday in Japan. If anything--it's a day for couples to go out and have a date. Yes, it's a date day.

So what did I do this Christmas? Well, work, of course!

Work means part-timing at a conveyor-belt-type sushi restaurant at Nagoya Station (name intentionally not mentioned). To this day, I still have no idea how the manager agreed to let me work here, but I am so not complaining because...

I get to take home sushi.

It's not the usual  ¥100-per-plate sushi restaurant. This one had different colored plates that had different prices. It ranges from \150 to \1000 per plate! Woah, right? The sushi is better than that of cheaper places, of course!

And so even though I didn't get to celebrate Christmas, being able to take home this much sushi (for free) is so worth it.

They don't usually let us take home the leftover sushi (company policy, ya know)--they throw out the leftover sushi. I think that it's the same for most restaurants. It's to stop employees from intentionally making a lot to be able to take it home. And trust me--we do throw the sushi out. It makes my heart hurt just thinking about all the sushi that just goes to waste (or goes to the rats tummies).

New Year is a holiday although I have work on New Year's Eve.

See you then!

Teriyaki Boy's Crazy Maki

Crazy RollsCrazy RollsMaki

Seeing all the food posts Tiffy's doing from Japan, I really craved for something Japanese, so I invited my co-interns and went out and ate at the nearest Japanese restaurant near my internship - Teriyaki Boy in Petron along Makati Avenue corner Jupiter St.

Teriyaki Boy offers its newest dishes, the Crazy Rolls, 12 different kinds of Maki that you will surely love. On my visit to T-boy that day, we tried the Philly Cheese Streak Roll.

T-boy Maki

Philly Cheese Steak Roll (Php 175; $USD 3.72) - An American classic with a Japanese twist. Teppanyaki beef with deep fried sweet onions, topped with flame torched cheese served with a dip. It was heavenly, and so satisfying.

Ma Po Tofu

We also got an order of Ma Po Tofu and an order of the Spicy Kakiage. Tofu is one of my favorite dishes. For me, almost anything and everything goes well with Tofu. The Ma Po Tofu we ordered was just the way I liked it. The pork and the sauce complimented the taste of the soft and fresh tofu dish. The spicy Kakiage, on the other hand, was excellent as well. It was deep fried with a batter and wrapped around Nori. The sauce dip was spicy and really perfect for me.
